Aiplaz Link Checkup

Description

Broken links send visitors to error pages and make a site look neglected. Aiplaz Link Checkup is a broken link checker that runs on your own site: it finds the broken links, dead images and 404 errors in your posts and pages, shows why each one fails, and helps you fix them from one screen.

There is no account to create, no outside service, and no limit on the number of links.

What it finds

  • Broken links: pages that answer “404 Not Found”, pages you deleted, and websites that no longer exist.
  • Moved links: addresses that redirect somewhere else, with the new address ready to use.
  • Links it could not check: sites that block automatic visitors are listed apart and are never called broken.
  • Images and embedded videos that no longer load.

How you fix a link

  • Replace the address in every post that uses it. A suggestion is ready: a similar page on your site, the home page of the other site, or an archived copy.
  • Create a redirect for a page of your own that you deleted, so old links and bookmarks keep working.
  • Update a moved link to its new address.
  • Remove the link and keep its text.
  • Fix all broken links in one step, a few posts at a time.
  • Undo any fix from the History screen. A revision of each post is saved first.

Built to avoid false alarms

  • A failing link is checked again before it is reported, so a short outage is not called a broken link.
  • You see the proof: since when the link fails, what the other site answered, and every post that uses it.
  • “Show on page” opens the post with the link outlined, so you find it at once on a long page.

Gentle on your site

  • Links are checked in small batches in the background through WP-Cron, so a shared host is not overloaded.
  • The checks pause when the database answers slowly.
  • The full check can wait for the night.
  • An optional e-mail lists the new broken links.

Page builders

The plugin reads the content WordPress stores for a post. On a page made with a page builder such as Elementor or Brizy, it lists the links it finds there and tells you to change them in the builder’s editor. It does not change such a page itself, because the builder keeps the page in its own data.

Source code

The admin screen in ui/build is built from the TypeScript source in ui/src, which is included in the plugin. To build it again, run npm install and then npm run build in the ui folder. The build tool is the public @wordpress/scripts.

External services

Checking links is the purpose of this plugin, so it contacts other sites:

  • To check a link, the plugin sends a request (HEAD, then GET when needed) to the address of that link, on whatever site it points to. Only the address itself is requested; no data about your site or your visitors is sent apart from the plugin’s user agent “Aiplaz Link Checkup (WordPress link checker)”. This happens in the background and when you press Recheck or test an address.
  • To suggest a replacement for a broken link, the plugin sends one HEAD request to the home page of the site the broken link points to, to see whether that site still answers.
  • For broken links the plugin shows a link to the Internet Archive (https://web.archive.org/) so you can look for an archived copy. The plugin itself sends no request there; your browser opens it only when you click it. Internet Archive terms of use and privacy policy: https://archive.org/about/terms.php

Installation

  1. Upload the aiplaz-link-checkup folder to /wp-content/plugins/, or install the plugin from the Plugins screen.
  2. Activate the plugin.
  3. Open Link Checkup in the admin menu and start the first scan.

FAQ

Which content is checked?

Published posts and pages: the links, the images and the embedded videos inside them. You can switch each of these off in Settings.

Why is a broken link not reported at once?

It is checked a second time first, to avoid false alarms. During a scan this happens right away, so broken links show when the scan ends. A site that only answers slowly or with a server error is tried again over the next day before it is listed.

How long does the first scan take?

With the screen open, seconds to a few minutes on most sites. You can close the page: the scan then continues in the background, one small batch a minute.

Does the plugin slow down my site?

No. It checks a few links at a time in the background and pauses when the database is slow.

Can I undo a fix?

Yes. Every fix is stored with the content it changed, and the History screen undoes it step by step. WordPress also keeps a revision of every changed post.

Does it work with page builders?

It finds the links in the content WordPress stores for the page and names the builder. It does not change a page made with a page builder; you change the link in that builder’s editor. “Create redirect” and “Ignore” work everywhere.

Is my content sent anywhere?

No. The checks run on your own site. The only requests that leave it are the checks of the links themselves, described under “External services”.

What happens when I deactivate or delete the plugin?

Deactivating stops the background jobs and keeps your data. Deleting the plugin removes its tables, options and scheduled jobs.
