## Description

Whether links fail because of DDoS attacks, censorship, or just plain old link rot,
reliably accessing linked content is a problem for Internet users everywhere. The
more routes we provide to information, the more all people can freely share that
information, even in the face of filtering or blockages. Amber adds to these routes.

Amber automatically preserves a snapshot of every page linked to on a website, giving
visitors a fallback option if links become inaccessible. If one of the pages linked
to on this website were to ever go down, Amber can provide visitors with access
to an alternate version. This safeguards the promise of the URL: that information
placed online can remain there, even amidst network or endpoint disruptions.

Lots of copies keeps stuff safe. By default, Amber stores snapshots directly on
the host website. But users can choose to store snapshots using a combination of
the following third party storage and archiving systems: the Internet Archive, Perma.
cc, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).

Amber is an open source project led by the [Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society](https://cyber.law.harvard.edu).
It builds on a proposal from Tim Berners-Lee and Jonathan Zittrain for a “mutual
aid treaty for the Internet” that would enable operators of websites to enter easily
into mutually beneficial agreements and bolster the robustness of the entire web.
The project also aims to mitigate risks associated with increasing centralization
of online content.

## FAQ

Here are two of the most frequently asked questions. A full list of FAQs, as well
as all Amber documentation, can be found on the [Amber wiki guide](https://github.com/berkmancenter/amber_wordpress/wiki).

What are some legal issues I should be aware of when using Amber?

Those who copy third-party content should always be aware of copyright issues. This
is no different when it comes to using Amber. When you use Amber, you are preserving
the copyrighted content of other publishers. Many uses of Amber — linking to and
preserving a webpage for purposes of criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching,
scholarship, or research — likely constitute fair use under United States law and
thus do not infringe on copyrights. However, users of Amber should be aware that
fair use rights vary significantly in different countries around the world. In addition,
there are limits to fair use.

For a helpful guide on fair use, please visit the [Digital Media Law Project](http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/fair-use).

For additional information on intellectual property issues that concern bloggers,
please visit the [Electronic Frontier Foundation](https://www.eff.org/issues/bloggers/legal/liability/IP).

Can websites opt-out of having their webpages preserved through Amber?

Amber respects the Robots Exclusion Standard and does not preserve any web page
that opts out of web crawling via this protocol. It also uses the user agent “Amber”
when preserving web pages, which you can choose to disallow on your website. You
can read a full overview at [Amberlink.org](http://amberlink.org/fetcher/).

Many thanks to the developers for this must-have plugin for anyone running an academic
database using Wordpress. The plugin provides a great solution to tackle link decay
that does not involve manually creating links on perma.cc etc. A few words on areas
of possible improvement: – better documentation for creation of local folder (and
the pesky permission issues) in which archives are created – better documentation
of how to access locally stored archives (I still haven’t found how to do this) –
fix the selection of the places where archives are created: for now it seemingly
randomly chooses among the three options I selected (local, perks.cc and internet
archive), rather than creating three archives systematically – better error messages–
a large number of links are not archived and there is no explanation as to why that
is

### 󠀁[Accessible archives are important](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/accessible-archives-are-important/)󠁿

Having an internet where content is available over long periods of time is very
important. This plug-in does a great job of making this dream become more realistic.
Very handy how it automatically archives all the links in each blog post. The plug-
in will tell you which links were successfully saved, and which aren’t. It does
not archive tweets or flickr photos. But it does a handy job of archiving other
articles. You can even set the limit of how big each archived article is, and the
you can set the maximum limit of all the archived articles held on your domain.
If you like, you can even bulk archive all the links on your blog at once! (use
the Amber Dashboard). If you believe in an internet that is a resource for future
generations, please consider using the Amber plug-in to archive all your links.

#### Version 1.4.1

Amber to v1.4.1.

#### Version 1.4

_Release date: December 7, 2015_

We’re in the WordPress plugin directory! New and improved in Amber v1.4 for WordPress:

 * **Storage of snapshots in other locations.** You can now choose to store snapshots
on one or more third party storage and archiving systems: the [Internet Archive](http://archive.org),
[Perma.cc](http://perma.cc), and [Amazon Web Services (S3)](http://https://aws.amazon.com/s3/).
You can enable this feature to free up space, take advantage of donated host
space, or simply to contribute to existing web archival efforts. Remember: lots
   of copies keeps stuff safe!
 * **Display of snapshots from other archives.** Amber can now also display to your
visitors alternative versions of a URL from other archives, including the Internet
Archive, the Library of Congress Web Archive, Archive-It, archive.is, Webcite,
and more. If enabled, you can display to your visitors the Amber snapshot in
addition to other available versions of the same page–providing even more routes
to linked content. This is made possible through expanded support of the [Memento protocol](http://mementoweb.org/about/)
and the Memento project’s [“time travel” and “TimeGate” concepts](http://timetravel.mementoweb.org/about/).
 * **Compatibility with academic efforts to retrieve more accurate data.** This
release defined parameters for Amber users to benefit from academic research
efforts on Internet activity and content controls. The Berkman Klein Center’s
[Internet Monitor](https://thenetmonitor.org/) project compiles and curates quantitative
data to give policy makers, digital activists, and researchers. Primary data
collected by the Berkman Klein Center and our partners, as well as relevant secondary
data, will one day help answer the difficult question of “Which URLs are down
for whom, where, when, and why?” While such a complete system is not in operation
right now, eventually users of Amber can enable this feature to benefit from (
by retrieving and contributing) such data.
